NTEP approved or "Legal for Trade" scales are required when you are charging a customer for a product or service based on the weight provided by the scale. In most states, this does not include scales for determing shipping charges based on weight, unless the customer is present.

NTEP scales provide an additional assurance of providing accurate weight since each manufacturer of the product has been submitted and passed a variety of tested performed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Weights and Measures division.
